Every eighteen months or so, a nutrient gets a marketing department. In 2025 it was protein, packed into bread, chips, cookies, coffee creamer — anything with a label. In 2026 it is fiber’s turn. The suffix is the same: -maxxing, the internet’s word for taking a reasonable idea and running it until it is no longer reasonable.
The honest answer is that one of these trends is correcting a genuine national deficiency and the other is mostly selling you something you already have enough of. Knowing which is which is worth more than any macro tracker.
The fiber gap is not a marketing invention
This is the part that survives the hype. A World Health Organization–commissioned series of systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in The Lancet in 2019 pooled roughly 135 million person-years of data across 185 prospective studies and 58 clinical trials. The quiet cost of a year of protein-maxxing was fiber. Plates reorganized around chicken, beef, whey, and eggs have less room for lentils, oats, barley, berries, and greens. The 2025 trend created part of the 2026 deficit.
